Why SMEs should invest in building a marketing team

Published 15 August 2023

As a business grows, marketing needs clear ownership. The question is which skills the business needs, what should sit inside the team and where outside support is useful.

Define the work before the role

List the decisions and tasks marketing needs to handle. Research, planning, design, content, digital delivery and reporting require different skills. A single appointment may not cover all of them.

Connect the team to sales and leadership

Give marketing access to customer feedback, commercial priorities and the people making decisions. Agree who approves the plan and how the team will work with sales.

Choose a workable structure

Some businesses need an internal lead supported by specialists. Others need senior external guidance while an internal team develops. Match the structure to the workload, budget and capability already available.

Give the team a way to learn

Agree a small set of useful measures and a regular review. Look at the work delivered, the response from customers and sales, and the assumptions that need checking. Protect time for planning and improvement as well as day-to-day requests.
