Recruitment strategies for SMEs

Published 24 August 2023

Recruitment communications should help a candidate decide whether the job and business are right for them. Start with an honest account of the work, the expectations and what the employer offers.

Find out why people stay

Talk to employees who know the role. Ask what they value, what is difficult and what a new starter should understand. Their answers are more useful than a generic list of company values.

Make the role clear

Explain the responsibilities, working arrangements, pay and benefits where appropriate, and how someone can develop. Use real examples and photographs with permission. Avoid promising a working experience the business cannot deliver.

Remove friction from applying

Check the process on a phone. Is the role easy to find? Are the requirements clear? Can a candidate apply without unnecessary steps? Tell people what happens next and communicate when the timetable changes.

Review the whole experience

Look beyond application volume. Review whether candidates understand the role, where people drop out and what new starters say about the process. Marketing can help explain the offer; the working experience needs to support it.
